Who We Are
We are a family ~ Jil, Geoffrey and Lukka ~ who work together at a variety of things that we love and believe in. Barndiva, Studio Barndiva, and Fork & Shovel all grew out of a simple desire to celebrate the exquisite food shed surrounding us, and help people recognize the effort it takes so many talented people to keep it going.
Sometimes this homage has a direct link: used cooking oil runs farm tractors, while organic trim from the kitchen feeds the chickens that lay our eggs. Sometimes it's more oblique: Barndiva is a founding member of Fork & Shovel, a farmers and chefs collaborative that includes 30 other restaurants. Where others see competition, we see collaboration, a rising tide that lifts all of us — chefs, farmers, artisans — as we source the delicious, the beautiful and the useful things that fill our lives.
When we haven't been dry farming apples, figs and chestnuts on a ridge above the pacific, we have pursued excellence in the worlds of architecture and design, photography, journalism, food and hospitality. We have done this in LA, London, San Francisco, and always in Philo, California. All our interests come together in Barndiva, and our gallery next door, Studio Barndiva.
Who They Are
Ryan Fancher is our chef de cuisine. He worked with Thomas Keller for three years at the French Laundry before moving to NYC as part of the opening team for Per Se. For the past few years he has been earning great props in his own right working for several distinguished restaurants in Napa County. He moved to Healdsburg 2 1/2 years ago to take Barndiva's unique dining concept to the next level. Ryan works directly with our small farm and ranch purveyors, many of whom raise animals and contract plant for our diverse range of menus: dinner, lunch, brunch, gastrobar, and fine dining special events, all of which are sourced from sustainable purveyors.
Our pastry chef, Tracy Mattson, came to us from Cyrus Restaurant. She has lifted our dessert program to a new level of sophistication while honoring Barndiva's desire to serve memory driven dishes that always take an unexpected journey to dining pleasure.
Our innovative wine program is under the direction of Thomas DeBiase, formerly of Press and Dean & Delucca, while Jil still holds onto the title of mixologist in residence. Lukka Feldman coordinates all private events as well as managing Healdsburg Modern Cottages, the newest jewel in our tiny handmade crown (and the coolest place to stay in town).
